Auslan, Interpreting and Translating Qualification Review (Phase 2)
Project Timeline
February 2026 – June 2027
Project Overview
A summary of the video is provided below.
Public Skills Australia is conducting a review of the Auslan, Interpreting and Translating qualifications to support the recommendations within the Disability Royal Commission. Because of the importance of this project, it has been broken into two phases.
Phase 1
This first phase involved stakeholder engagement to gather insights and determine the scope of changes required. The outcomes of this engagement have been compiled within the Auslan, Interpreting, and Translating Qualifications Review report.
Stakeholder insights were categorised into three parts:
- Employment and Community insights
- Training Delivery Considerations
- Training Package Considerations
The findings and recommendations within the report were consulted and validated by stakeholders in late 2025. The recommendations within the report align to the remit of Public Skills Australia as a Jobs and Skills Council. This is predominantly to update and maintain Training Packages.
Phase 2
The second phase of this project will implement the findings and recommendations from Phase One using advice from a Technical Committee, established to inform the review of the Auslan qualifications.
It will focus on refining the relevant qualifications and promoting their broader use, delivery and implementation.
The outcomes of this phase are expected to enhance the accessibility and quality of Auslan training, ensuring it meets the needs of both the interpreting community and the Deaf community.
Drafts of the reviewed Auslan qualifications will be made available publicly for feedback before being finalised.

Establishment of Technical Committee
Feb 2026 - Jun 2026As part of the federal government’s requirements to update training packages, a technical committee must be established to provide advice on the design of qualifications.
This project’s committee will be established by seeking subject matter experts, educational experts, RTO representatives, union representatives, and government representatives with relevant experience.
Sessions will be held in an accessible format, and Interpreters will be arranged by Public Skills Australia.
Due to departmental policy, Technical Committee membership is voluntary, and no renumeration can be offered for participation.
Please note that nominations for this Technical Committee have now closed, and session planning has commenced.
Product Development
Jul 2026 - Oct 2026Public Skills Australia will develop draft training products informed by advice from the Technical Committee, as established under the Training Package Organising Framework (2025).
As part of this process, Public Skills Australia will present the findings and recommendations from Phase 1, specifically the Auslan, Interpreting and Translating Qualification Review report. These recommendations will support the Technical Committee in identifying the required updates to qualifications, skill sets and units of competency.
The outcomes of these discussions will guide the drafting of revised training products to ensure they align with industry expectations and contemporary job roles.
